Overview

Correct the finish, then protect it

Correct the finish. Most of what makes paint look tired is thousands of fine scratches in the clear coat, left by brush washes and dry wiping. Machine polishing removes a controlled amount of that clear coat to reduce suitable swirl marks and surface defects, so light reflects cleanly again and the colour regains depth.

Protect the result. A ceramic coating is a hard, transparent layer bonded to the prepared paint. It holds that corrected finish, resists bird lime, salt and UV, and makes routine washing quicker and safer. It is not a substitute for washing the car properly.

Both happen in our Braintree studio, where controlled lighting shows what is actually being corrected and a dust-managed space matters during coating.

Deep marring and swirling machine polished out panel by panel. Dark paint hides nothing, and every panel now reflects cleanly with the coating holding that finish.

The process

How the work is carried out

The coating itself takes hours. Everything before it is what decides the result.

  1. 01

    Assessment

We inspect the paint under studio lighting and take depth readings, so we know exactly how much clear coat there is to work with before anything touches the car.

  2. 02

    Safe wash

Pre-wash, contact wash with LSP-safe non-caustic products, then chemical and mechanical decontamination to strip embedded fallout and tar.

  3. 03

    Test panel

We test different pad and compound combinations on a test panel first, then show you the tailored correction results achieved by the best combination so you can see the difference.

  4. 04

    Correction

The agreed stages are worked panel by panel, with regular checks under lighting. We use specialised rinseless solutions that emulsify the polish and residue on the surface, so it wipes away safely without marring the finish underneath.

  5. 05

    Coating

Every surface is IPA wiped down to strip it back to bare, clean paint, then the coating is applied panel by panel and levelled at the right moment. It is left to cure overnight in a controlled environment held at 22°C.

  6. 06

The finish, in practice

What you actually get

  • Clearer reflections, deeper gloss

Levelled paint reflects light cleanly instead of scattering it. Metallics regain flake and dark colours look wet rather than flat.

  • Easier routine maintenance

Water beads and sheets off rather than sitting and drying into spots, and dirt struggles to bond, so a safe wash takes less time. The car still needs washing.

  • The corrected finish is protected

Bird droppings, sap, road salt and fallout are far less likely to etch, and the coating slows the oxidation that fades paint, so the work you paid for lasts.

How they compare

Wax, ceramic coating or film?

Three different jobs. A coating is the right answer for gloss and easier washing; film is the right answer for stone chips.

Common questions

Correction and coating questions

Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

In almost every case, yes, which is why every package includes it. A coating is transparent and seals in whatever is underneath, so any swirls present at application stay visible for the life of the coating. On a genuinely new car with healthy paint a light single-stage polish may be all that is needed.

Will paint correction remove every scratch?

No, and anyone promising that is not being straight with you. Marks confined to the clear coat can usually be removed. Deeper scratches that have gone through it cannot be polished out safely, because there is a finite amount of clear coat available. We show you which is which before starting.

Will a ceramic coating stop stone chips?

No. A ceramic coating is a chemical barrier, not a physical one, and it will not absorb an impact. If stone chips are your main concern, XPEL paint protection film is the correct answer for the exposed panels. Many customers use film on the front end and a coating everywhere else.

How long does the work take?

Typically one to three days depending on the package and the condition of the paint. Correction is the variable, not the coating itself. The car also needs to stay with us to cure properly before it goes back out in the weather.

How long will the coating last?

We use PPL Reign, a 7-year ceramic coating, on every package. Applied to properly prepared paint it will see out that rating with the right care. It is a coating, not a permanent finish: the car still needs washing safely and an occasional decontamination wash to keep performing.

Can I still wash the car normally?

Yes, and you should. Use a pH-neutral shampoo, a soft wash mitt and a two-bucket method, then dry with a clean microfibre. Avoid automatic brush washes entirely, as they will put swirls into any surface no matter what is protecting it.

Is machine polishing safe for my paint?

In trained hands, yes. Correction removes a small, controlled amount of clear coat, which is why we take depth readings first and check as we go. The risk comes from working without measurement, on thin or previously polished paint.
